The .Me domains "landrush" period is ending in roughly 10 days and already thousands have snapped up their very own .me domain ideas. Well, sort of. The dot me domains landrush means everyone and anyone can apply for a domain ending with .me from the World's Largest Registrar - GoDaddy.com. The real juice about the .me domains, according to domaining industry experts and .me domain registry handlers is the branding ability of the top level domain.Recently, high profile companies like Apple have registered multiple .me domain name after snapping up the domain me.com. "News leaks" from inside Apple have revealed that the company is doing some major additions from the Apple iPhone this 2008 and they're building it around the .me domains they've been hording. Microsoft, MTV and BMW are also among the big names that got into this .me domain business and are either securing their trademarks or like Apple, they are making these domains as springboards for the latest stuff.
Going back to the title question, are .me domains worthy investments? At this point in time and to be honest about it, the answer is no. But Apple and so many among the thousands of domainers and companies have thought otherwise. Most of the time, domain investments are speculative. You buy a good domain with the hope and prayers that one day some top-honcho company would buy it from you like ireport.com bought by CNN from this big domaining dude. The guy easily became 750 large richer. You could also be proactive about it and build a business around a .me domain which then could end up sold for a large sum.
Dot me domains, I think a business of "futures." So many domain owners have held on to their prized domains and sold it nth times what they paid for it. If we follow the way of Apple, Microsoft and the rest of the big names in the industry, .me domains is a $99.98 initial investment that can really pan out in the future.

It'll be interesting to see how the auctions pan out... $75 minimum bid, as the landrush ap simply buys you a seat at the auction (unless you are the only applicant).
Sunrise Challenge period is also winding down...
One very VERY important thing to keep in mind (and I learned this the HARD way) is you cannot buy a domain of a famous company with the .ME extension. Check the anticybersquatting and you'll see what I mean.
Very true Avalon! I think those who believe they can still make money out of buying somebody else's trademark are severely outdated and misinformed.
Thanks for the comment.
